We get it, planning a family ski holiday can be a mission. But at Coronet Peak, we’ve made it easy. Just 20 minutes from Queenstown, our mountain is built for good times and smooth runs. Whether you're wrangling first-timers or skiing with little legends.

From toddlers to teens, we’ve got something for every age and ability. Children aged 5 and under ski free, and our progressive terrain, and Skiwiland early learning centre are here to make your visit unforgettable and totally doable.
Here are our top tips to having a successful ski day with the whole family:

Plan Ahead

A little planning goes a long way. Whether it’s your first time up the hill or you’ve got a crew of little legends in tow, these simple tips will help set your family up for a smooth, stress-free day on the snow.

Sort the Night Before
Pack your gear the night before and lay it all out - boots, gloves, goggles, the lot. Line it up in the order the kids will put it on, and you’ll thank yourself in the morning. It’s also the perfect moment to check nothing’s missing.

Check the Snow Report
Our daily Snow Report is up from 6:30am each morning and updates throughout the day if conditions change. It’s your go-to for lift status, temps, and what the weather’s doing up top. If it’s looking chilly, throw in an extra layer for the kids.

Arrive Early
The early bird gets the closest car park (or the front seats on the Ski Bus from Queenstown). Beat the rush, grab a hot choc, and ease into the day with zero stress.

Getting Here

Getting to Coronet Peak is easy, even with little ones in tow. The Ski Bus is a great option for families, taking the stress out of snow day travel. No need to worry about chains or parking. It’s popular during peak season and weekends, so we recommend booking early. If you’ve got lessons, check the schedule to make sure you arrive with plenty of time.

Driving up? We’re just 16km from central Queenstown via a sealed alpine road. Our Getting Here Guide has all the tips you need for a smooth, family-friendly journey to the snow.

Get their gear right

The difference between a full-day adventure and a meltdown by mid-morning? It’s all in the prep.

Cold fingers, soggy socks, and the dreaded boot tantrum, we’ve all been there. But a few smart tweaks can turn your snow day into a win:

Practice at home. Getting geared up can feel overwhelming for kids. A few dress rehearsals at home can make all the difference. It’s also a great chance to chat about what to expect on the mountain.

Sunblock on. Even on those cloudier days.

Layer like a legend. Tuck base and mid layers neatly under the jacket to keep the warmth in.

Socks smooth. No wrinkles or bunching inside boots.

Boots snug. Toes should just touch the end. No heel lift, no pressure points.

Pants over boots. Both layers. Keeps the snow out and the good times rolling.

Neck warmer up. Cover any gaps.

Gloves that fit. Dry, warm hands make a world of difference. Top Tip - always good to have a second pair just in case they get wet/lost.

Goggles attached to helmet. Nice and snug but not too tight. It's all about comfort here.

MyPass in place. A high jacket or sleeve pocket works best, so your little one can glide through the lift gates without a hitch.

Set Your Snow Day Game Plan

Here’s how to keep the day running smooth:

Set meeting times and places
Pick an easy to find location on the deck or inside the base building as your go-to meet-up point. Handy if you’re splitting up for lessons or someone needs a breather.

Take regular breaks
Fatigue can creep up on you when the vibes are good! It helps the day run smooth and everyone make it to the end with smiles if you schedule some regular breaks. Loosen up the ski boots, grab a hot choccy and a bite to eat at the cafe and head back out when everyone’s ready.

Keep it flexible
Kids’ energy can change with the weather. Be ready to pivot - whether that’s an early lunch or swapping one last run for a snowball fight.

Need a hand remembering it all?
